Daenerys Tells Drogon Where Land (Game of Thrones TV Show)

It’s well-established throughout the Game of Thrones TV Show that Daenerys Targaryen shares a close bond with her three dragons, Drogon, Rhaegal, and Viserion.

However, what you might not have picked up on is that Dany has a much closer bond with one of them in particular, Drogon. Although she has a strong motherly bond with all three, we have three key pieces of evidence that she is bonded with Drogon more closely than Rhaegal and Viserion.

Imprinting

First, of the three eggs, she was nearest to Drogon when he hatched. In the book, after she hears the crack of the first two eggs, she walks forward into Khal Drogo’s funeral pyre and calls to the dragon hatchlings. Only when she is in the fire does the third egg crack open “as loud and sharp as the breaking of the world” (A Game of Thrones, Chapter 72). That’s likely when Drogon imprinted on her.

Among the TV shows, House of the Dragon goes into the mechanics of dragon bonding more deeply than Game of Thrones.

In it, they explain that when dragons hatch, those with an affinity for dragons, chiefly the Targaryens, can bond with them. This is a closer relationship than just controlling or taking care of them. We see caretakers of the dragons must use long poles to poke and prod them, whereas a dragon and their bonded partner have a more loving connection.

Dragon Riding

Second, the best evidence we have of when someone truly bonds to a dragon is when they become its rider. Every dragon we know of in the two television shows only has one rider at a time. Although, once a dragon rider dies, a new dragon rider may bond with them.

Dany only rides Drogon in Game of Thrones, showing her deep bond with the black and red-winged beast.

The bond between dragon and dragon rider also appears to involve the establishment of a psychic link between the two. It’s not quite as vivid as Bran’s ability to “Warg,” where one sees and feels through the mind of another animal, but it is more than just a close emotional bond.

Dany’s Bond with Drogon

This brings us to a powerful moment viewers may have missed in Game of Thrones. At 1:27 in the following clip from S6E09, Here Be Dragons, Dany points to the exact spot on the ground where Drogon lands.

Leading up to this moment, Drogon soars onto the scene with impeccable timing to intimidate the Slavers. Then, we see Drogon land precisely where Daenerys is pointing, tucking his head around her before she climbs on top of him.

Dany doesn’t stop staring at the Slavers during the entire sequence, showing her confidence in her relationship with Drogon. They are completely in sync with one another. With all this evidence combined, it appears clear that Dany is specially bonded with Drogon over and above her other two dragons.
